How do you predict a race finish time from pace?

What is the difference between gun time and chip time?
Gun time is measured from the starter's signal to the moment you cross the finish line, including any delay before you reach the start mat in a crowded corral. Chip time is your net time, measured from crossing the start mat to crossing the finish mat, so it only counts your actual running. Most race rankings use chip time for age-group awards. Finish-time calculators assume chip time, so enter your net time, never the gun time, when planning goals and splits.
How do I predict my marathon time from a 10K result?
