How to use this race pace calculator

Enter the requested distance, time, pace or speed, then select Calculate result. The calculator preserves seconds before rounding the displayed answer, which avoids the errors that build up when pace is rounded too early. This is especially useful for evaluating whether a race goal matches current training.

Distance is converted to kilometers internally, elapsed time is converted to seconds, and pace is calculated as total seconds divided by distance. The same value is then converted to minutes per mile using 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers. Cumulative splits assume the pace remains even.

How to interpret your result

Treat the displayed number as a planning reference. Pace describes an average and does not show whether the effort was evenly distributed. Two runners can finish in the same time while using very different strategies. Review lap data and perceived effort alongside the final average whenever those details are available.

For a race goal, compare the target with recent training before relying on it. A small negative split can be safer than banking time early, because a pace that feels effortless in the opening minutes may become disproportionately expensive later.

Accuracy and useful adjustments

How do I estimate a realistic race pace?

Start with a recent time trial or shorter race result. If you raced 5K in 25:00, use Riegel's formula, T2 = T1 x (D2/D1)^1.06, to predict equivalent times at longer distances: about 52:10 for 10K and 1:55 for a half marathon. This assumes you have trained adequately for the longer distance. Add a safety margin for your first attempt at any new distance, and consider course hills, heat, and wind before committing to a goal pace.

What is Riegel's formula for race time prediction?

Riegel's formula predicts a race time from a known performance: T2 = T1 x (D2/D1)^1.06, where T1 is your known time over distance D1 and T2 is the predicted time over distance D2. The exponent 1.06 accounts for fatigue growing with distance. It is most reliable when the two distances are within about 2-3x of each other: a 10K-to-half prediction is usually within 2-3 minutes for well-trained runners, while predicting a marathon from a 5K is less trustworthy.

How do I calculate a pace band for a custom distance like a 50K?

First set a realistic goal finish time, either from a recent result using Riegel's formula or from a training run at the same terrain. Then divide the goal time by the distance: for a 50K in 6 hours, that is 360 minutes divided by 50 km, giving 7:12 per kilometer (11:36 per mile). Break the route into 5K checkpoints, each worth 36 minutes. Add elevation and aid-station stops, which usually add 1-2% to your total time.

How much does heat slow your race pace?

Above about 15°C, pace slows roughly 1-3% for every 5°C rise in temperature. At 25°C, expect to be 2-6% slower than your cool-day goal pace; at 30°C that can reach 5-10% slower, especially over 10K and longer. The slowdown is larger for slower runners because they spend more time absorbing heat. Adjust your goal pace accordingly or lower your time target, and base effort on heart rate rather than pace on hot race days.

How fast should I run the first mile of a race?

The first mile should be your goal pace or slightly slower, never faster. Adrenaline at the start makes most runners run 10-20 seconds per mile faster than planned without noticing. For a goal pace of 8:00/mile, target 8:00-8:15 for the opening mile, then settle in. Data from major marathons shows that runners who go out too fast fade badly and finish slower overall. A slightly conservative start also leaves room for a strong, negative-split finish.

How does altitude affect race pace?

Above about 1,500 meters (5,000 feet), the reduced oxygen in the air slows your pace significantly. As a rough guide, expect to run about 3-5% slower at 1,500-2,400m, and 8-12% slower above 3,000m, until you are acclimatized. That means a 4:30/km runner may slow to 4:40-4:45/km at altitude. Full acclimatization takes 2-4 weeks. If you race at altitude soon after arriving, adjust your goal pace upward and run by effort.

Should I run even splits or negative splits in a race?

For races of 10K and longer, negative splits (second half faster than the first) consistently produce the fastest times, with even splits close behind. For a half marathon, run the first half 30-90 seconds slower than the second; for a marathon, aim for 1-3 minutes slower in the first half. Positive splits, where you slow dramatically, are the most common pacing error. At 5K and shorter, go out at goal pace and hold on, since glycogen is not a factor.
