Which formula is more accurate: Epley or Brzycki?

Both are well validated. The Epley formula — 1RM = load x (1 + 0.0333 x reps) — is often accurate within about 2.7 kg, while Brzycki — 1RM = load / (1.0278 − 0.0278 x reps) — is typically within about 3.1 kg when using 3–5 rep test weights. Accuracy is similar for most lifters, and many calculators use Epley as the default. Small differences between formulas are not worth worrying about.

Should I test my true 1RM directly?

For most people, no. Maximal attempts carry a real risk of injury, especially for beginners, and heavy singles require specialized technique and preparation. Submaximal testing — lifting a moderate weight for 3–5 clean reps and letting the calculator estimate — gives a very close prediction with far less risk. Experienced lifters with spotters can test 1RMs safely, but estimates work well for programming in almost every case.

Why does my estimated 1RM differ between lifts?

Every lift involves different muscles, leverage, and technique, so strength does not transfer evenly across exercises. Your squat 1RM may be far higher than your overhead press 1RM, which is completely normal. Limb proportions and joint angles also affect how much you can lift on each exercise. Track each lift's 1RM separately and set training percentages from the estimate for that specific movement.
