How to use this tempo pace calculator
Enter the requested distance, time, pace or speed, then select Calculate result. The calculator preserves seconds before rounding the displayed answer, which avoids the errors that build up when pace is rounded too early. This is especially useful for planning continuous tempo runs and longer cruise intervals.
The estimate begins with average pace from a recent 5K and applies a purpose-specific range. It is intentionally a range rather than a single mandatory number. A 5K result should be recent, accurately measured and representative of current fitness.
How to interpret your result
Treat the displayed number as a planning reference. Pace describes an average and does not show whether the effort was evenly distributed. Two runners can finish in the same time while using very different strategies. Review lap data and perceived effort alongside the final average whenever those details are available.
Training intensity should match the purpose of the session. Easy and long runs support aerobic volume; tempo and threshold work add controlled intensity. Slowing down because of heat, hills or fatigue is not a failed workout when the intended effort stays correct.
Accuracy and useful adjustments
CalcFino uses full-precision conversion factors and rounds only the final display. Your input quality remains the largest source of uncertainty. GPS distance can drift around buildings, under trees and on tight tracks. Certified race distances, calibrated treadmills and correctly measured pools provide stronger inputs.
Weather and terrain change sustainable pace even when fitness is unchanged. Heat increases cooling demand, wind changes energy cost and elevation adds muscular load. Use the result to establish a baseline, then adjust with experience and effort. Do not use a calculator to override pain, illness or medical guidance.
Frequently asked questions
What is a tempo run pace?
Tempo pace is a 'comfortably hard' effort, around RPE 6-7 out of 10, that you could sustain for about 40-60 minutes in a race. For most runners it lands right around half marathon race pace, roughly 85% of max heart rate. It is typically 25-30 seconds per mile slower than your 5K race pace. At tempo pace you can say a short phrase but not hold a conversation. The goal is to train your body to clear lactate at a faster speed.
How long should a tempo run be?
A classic tempo run is 20-40 minutes at tempo pace, bookended by a 10-minute warm-up and 10-minute cool-down. Beginners should start with 20 minutes and build to 30-35 over a training block. Beyond 40 minutes you are usually dropping to marathon pace rather than true tempo effort. Advanced runners can break it into intervals, such as 2-3 x 15 minutes at tempo pace with 2-5 minutes easy jog between blocks, accumulating more total tempo time with better quality.
How is tempo pace related to half marathon pace?
For most runners, tempo pace and half marathon race pace are nearly identical, within about 5-10 seconds per kilometer. That is why tempo runs are such good half marathon preparation: they train your body to sustain the exact effort a sub-2:00 or sub-1:45 half demands. A runner targeting a 5:41/km half (2:00 finish) would do tempo runs at roughly 5:35-5:45/km. Tempo pace is slightly slower than threshold pace and slightly faster than marathon pace.
How do I find my tempo pace without a calculator?
Run a 30-minute time trial on a flat course after a 10-15 minute warm-up, then use the average pace of the final 20 minutes as your approximate tempo pace. Alternatively, use your 10K race pace, which is very close to tempo pace for many runners, or add about 25-30 seconds per mile to your 5K race pace. Because effort matters more than exact numbers, aim for 'comfortably hard': working steadily but never gasping.
Should I pace tempo runs by pace or by effort?
Use effort as the primary guide and pace as a target. On a flat track or road in good weather, your prescribed tempo pace is reliable. In heat, hills, or wind, hold the same RPE 6-7 effort and let the pace fall where it falls, which may be 10-30 seconds per mile slower. Heart rate is a useful middle ground: most runners sit at about 85% of max HR at tempo effort. Never force the pace number on a bad day.
What is a tempo interval workout?
A tempo interval session breaks the tempo effort into repeat blocks with short recovery, allowing more total time at tempo pace. Examples: 3 x 10 minutes at tempo pace with 2-3 minutes easy jog between, or 2 x 20 minutes with 5 minutes easy. Cruise intervals, like 4 x 1 mile at tempo pace with 60-second jog recovery, are a popular variant. These sessions suit faster runners and still target the lactate-clearance system while reducing the monotony of one long block.
How is tempo pace different from marathon pace?
Tempo pace is faster than marathon pace, roughly 10-20 seconds per kilometer faster for most runners, because a marathon is run comfortably below threshold while a tempo run sits right at the edge of it. Marathon pace work builds race-specific economy and confidence; tempo work raises your lactate threshold. A 3:30 marathoner (4:58/km) would do tempo runs around 4:40-4:50/km. Both belong in a balanced plan, but they are not interchangeable sessions.
